Thomas SpoerndlePalm Mapping: Right, 2019Graphite and Marker on Paper15 x 11 inches
The Palm Mapping drawings relate to an on-going series of paintings in which I use my hands as a tool to build compositions, trading the hard lines of my geometric works for a more organic sense of form and structure. In each work I start with the base of my palm at the center point and trace around the sides of my hand to just below the fingers, spiraling around to repeat on each of the horizontal, vertical and diagonal axes. The result is a dynamic pictorial space that oscillates between representational forms and a pinwheel of seemingly random lines/shapes.
